Name: Allison Shaw (She/Her)
BCITMA Position: VP of Mentorship
Why did you join the BCITMA?
"I joined to be apart of a community filled with creative and determined minds that would help me become the best version of myself.”
What does your role look like as a VP of your committee?
”It is really about trying to understand what first year students are wanting to learn more about apart from the academics, and more about the industry.”
Do you have any experiences you would like to share from your time as a VP?
”Just getting to know some amazing people I probably never would have met otherwise.”
How do you keep your personal and work/school life balanced?
”It’s important to schedule time in your week to have you time. Maybe that is scheduling in a run after class or booking in a lunch with your friends. When you have it in your planner, it allows you to take a second and remember to also have fun. Sometimes I felt bad for wanting to hang out with my friends or do something for me when I could be studying, but taking some time away actually is more beneficial for your brain then spending the entire time in a book.”
Can you share what you’ve learned so far with BCITMA?
”When you surround yourself with positive and bright individuals, it truly affects the way you view the world. Coming into BCIT I was nervous about the workload and the expectations, but the community at the MA is so supportive and caring, everyone is always trying to make each other better. That’s something I will take with me into my future careers.”
Any tips or tricks you would like to share with Marketing students?
”Never stop being curious. If you want to learn something or you want to try something new out, don’t be afraid. Tackle the challenge and continue to be a sponge. The more you learn, you more of an asset you can become.”
