Meet Darlene Laureano
March 2023 Edition
INTERVIEW QUESTIONS
Name: Darlene Laureano (she/her)
BCITMA Position: VP of Internal Communications
Why did you join the BCITMA?
"I joined BCITMA because I wanted to be a part of a team environment that closely resembled an environment I will soon become a part of. Moreover, I really wanted to improve my copy and content writing skills beyond the creative skills I acquired already with this club.”
What does your role look like as a VP of your committee?
”My role involves fostering a positive and uplifting environment through newsletters and other content-related work that was needed within BCITMA. Whether that be through social media, the blog, and email! With the help of my co-VP, we were also working towards providing an environment where our committee members could help improve their skills.”
Do you have any experiences you would like to share from your time as a VP?
”As a VP, I really enjoyed creating newsletters through MailChimp, creating social media copy and working alongside other committees. If you love writing and want to explore what you can do with it, this is definitely the committee for you! However, responsibility always comes with challenges. With this role, I experienced navigating a leadership role and trying to balance school, work and life. Delegating tasks and coordinating meetings while planning your work within the committee has not always been perfect, but it is honestly something that I am continuously striving to improve. Regardless of the challenges, my experience within this role has been extremely rewarding.”
How do you keep your personal and work/school life balanced?
”Just like everyone else, I don't believe I have a perfect recipe. However, for me, I found boundaries were the only way to really feel balanced. Just check in with yourself and ask what you can handle on a day-to-day basis. Make time for yourself, loved ones, and whatever little things keep you going.”
Can you share what you’ve learned so far with BCITMA?
”More than anything, I learned that time management and communication are key! Be honest with what you can handle and how much time each task actually requires. In relation to the communication part, a perfect quote from another VP states, "it's better to ask questions than not know the answers." I've yet to fully drill this into my very being, but truly an important concept in that it's really okay to ask questions, no matter how silly or annoying they may seem.”
Any tips or tricks you would like to share with Marketing students?
”I think, really, to recap, be honest with yourself, have some boundaries, find time for things that keep you going, and don't be afraid to ask questions!”
